What is a Swedish Massage?
A Swedish Massage is a type of massage in which the therapist uses five styles of flowing strokes to massage the body.
These strokes are:
- Effleurage – (sliding/gliding)
- Petrissage – (kneading)
- Tapotement – (rhythmic tapping)
- Friction – (cross fibber)
- Vibration/shaking
Swedish massage has been known to reduce pain, joint stiffness and improve patients with osteoarthritis (a form of joint disease of the knee) over a period of eight weeks, it also improves circulation (especially for people with poor circulation).
In a Swedish massage the patient is usually nude and has a towel or sheet, the patient uncovers only the part of the body he/she is going to be working on, this technique is known as ‘draping’ – although the technique is usually performed nude therapists do allow you to keep your underwear on, many newcomers do.
