Hair Removal Using Ellipse Intense Pulsed Light
Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Flint razors have been found that date back to the time of the cave-dwellers, and archaeologists have discovered obsidian shaving tools that are around 4000 years old. In most of the worlds cultures the removal of female body hair is accepted as normal but male body hair acceptance varies throughout the decades with the sixties and seventies favouring face and body hair on men whilst today many men chose to remove facial, chest or back hair
As well as shaving, other methods have been and are still used: plucking, waxing and electrolysis. All of these methods have drawbacks. Shaving, plucking and waxing are all temporary and may result in ingrown hairs or skin irritation. Electrolysis is only capable of treating one hair at a time and can be costly, painful and time consuming.
Ellipse hair removal treatment offers clinically-proven, safe and effective long-term removal of unwanted hair.
How does Ellipse treatment work?
To achieve long lasting or permanent hair removal, it is necessary to destroy the hair follicle from which individual hairs grow. Well controlled pulses of light penetrate the upper skin layer and are absorbed by one of the body's own natural chemicals - melanin - in the hair contained in the follicle.
Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred to the hair follicle, which is destroyed, making it unable to produce a new hair. The treatment is only effective on growing hairs as these are still attached to the follicle. The majority of our hair is in the resting phase which explains why more than one treatment is necessary.
This technique is called "Selective Photothermolysis"
The visible light produced by the Ellipse Flex and Ellipse Light systems are carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the follicle.
What happens during the treatment?
Prior to your first treatment you will have a free consultation with a laser technician where relevant medical conditions, medication, expectations and treatment plan will be discussed. A test patch will be performed during this consultation to ensure that Ellipse intense pulsed light treatment is right for you.
The area to be treated will be shaved and all surface hair removed and you will be asked to wear protective eyewear. To ensure optimal light transmission to the hair, a thin layer of gel (similar to that used in ultrasound examinations) is applied to your skin before treatment.
The Ellipse operator guides the visible light from the flash-lamp to the treatment area. The operator then moves the hand-held applicator over the entire treatment area exactly one applicator width after each flash of light. The unique Ellipse system carefully filters this light in two ways to ensure that only light with the correct wavelengths is allowed to reach your skin.
